On Monday April 29, the Cambridge City Council held a 7 hour meeting on whether to delay the 2026 deadline for completing 22.5 miles of separated bike lanes. After 300 comments from citizens, almost all of whom argued against the delay, the council voted 5-4 in favor of the delay.

While I did stay up for a while to watch the meeting online, I won't provide details that have been well covered elsewhere, such as in StreetsBlog Mass, Cambridge Day, and The Harvard Crimson.

However, I will say that notwithstanding this disappointing vote, Cambridge is a shining jewel in the region when it comes to bike lanes.

I recently created a handy and succinct fact sheet providing an overview of Cambridge's current and planned bike infrastructure, and you can open it as a word document below:

The bottom line is that Cambridge, while less than a 6th the size of Boston in population and area, already has a more robust bike infrastructure than its larger neighbor. And even with the one year delay, by 2027 Cambridge will boast a comprehensive network of protected lanes that will be the envy of Michelle Wu.....
